What is an Ecocardiogram?

Echocardiograms are a safe and painless way to evaluate the heart. They are used to investigate heart size and function; detect congenital defects and infections; evaluate blood flow through the heart; study valve disease; and determine if there is damage from an injury or infection.

Echocardiogram testing can be performed in any age group, but they are especially useful in children because they allow us to see how well the heart is functioning without using X-rays or radiation. We use sound waves to create images of your child’s heart on a monitor so you can see it beat.

Echocardiography is used to diagnose many heart conditions, including:

• Heart failure (an enlarged heart)
• Heart valve problems (such as stenosis or regurgitation)
• Cardiac tumors (including aortic aneurysms)
• Congenital heart defects (including patent ductus arteriosus)
• Aortic dissection (a tear in the wall of the body’s largest artery)
